What are Holographic Labels?

Holographic labels have a reflective surface that shifts through different colors as the light or viewing angle changes. The effect comes from the material itself, so it remains visible through areas of the design where the holographic surface is allowed to show.

This is different from adding holographic foil to a standard label. With a holographic label, the base material itself creates the effect.

Why choose Holographic?

The material creates the effect

The color shift comes from the holographic surface itself, not from an added foil finish.

Changes with the light

The appearance shifts as the label catches light from different angles.

Use as much or as little as you want

The holographic surface can be part of the overall design or used more selectively within the artwork.

Where it works well

Cosmetics & Skincare

Works well when the holographic surface is meant to be part of the packaging design.

Beverage Labels

A strong option for bottles and cans when the reflective material fits the look of the product.

Available finishes

Lamination

Soft Touch, Gloss, or Matte. A layer over the print that changes how it feels and reflects light.

2D Foil

A flat, reflective metallic accent layered on top of the shimmer on specific areas of your design.

3D Foil

The same metallic finish as 2D Foil, raised so the foiled area has texture you can feel.

Spot UV isn’t available on Holographic. The foil-like surface can’t hold the raised coating.

Holographic vs. Metallic Labels

Both use reflective materials, but the effect is different.

Holographic
Metallic
Appearance
Shifts through multiple colors as the light and viewing angle change.
Uses a reflective metallic surface with a gold or silver appearance.
Base effect
The holographic pattern is built into the label material.
The metallic appearance comes from the reflective gold or silver material.
When to consider it
When you want color shift and movement to be part of the design.
When you want a more traditional gold or silver reflective surface.
Design direction
Works well when the changing color effect is intentionally incorporated into the artwork.
Works well when the design calls for a consistent gold or silver metallic appearance.

Looking for a more traditional metallic finish? See Gold Metallic Labels or Silver Metallic Labels.

Artwork considerations

Decide where you want the holographic material to show

The base material creates the holographic effect, so think about which areas of the design should allow that surface to remain visible.

Keep important content inside the cut line

Keep text, logos and other important elements safely inside the finished edge of the label.

You'll see a proof first

Every order receives a digital proof before production so you can review the artwork before it moves forward.
