Not sure which material to choose?

Start with the look you want. You can narrow things down quickly from there.

Want a no-label look?

Crystal Clear

The container or product shows through the clear material.

Want a versatile white synthetic label?

White PP

A smooth white BOPP film that works across a wide range of bottles, jars and product packaging.

Want a flatter white synthetic surface?

Matte PVC

A white synthetic stock with a lower-sheen appearance.

Prefer paper?

Semi-Gloss Paper

A smooth white paper stock with a light sheen and a familiar printed-paper feel.

Want the paper itself to show?

Natural Kraft Paper, Eggshell Felt White or Eggshell Felt Beige

Kraft gives you a natural brown base. Eggshell Felt White and Beige give you a textured paper surface in a white or warm beige base.

Want a premium textured paper for wine or spirits?

Estate #4 Paper, Estate #8 Paper or Estate #9 Paper

Neenah's Estate Label papers add a laid or vellum surface texture and a white, bright white or cream base.

Want shine built into the material?

Holographic, Gold Metallic or Silver Metallic

These stocks reflect light before any additional foil or specialty finish is added.

Understanding the material families

You do not need to know every stock name to get started. Most choices fall into a few basic groups.

Synthetic

Crystal Clear, White PP or Matte PVC

Film-based materials for customers who want a synthetic label rather than paper, including a clear option for a no-label look. White PP is White Polypropylene, commonly called White BOPP.

Paper

Semi-Gloss Paper

A smooth, coated white paper with a light sheen and a familiar printed-paper feel.

Textured & Premium Papers

Estate #4 Paper, Estate #8 Paper, Estate #9 Paper, Eggshell Felt White, Eggshell Felt Beige or Natural Kraft Paper

Uncoated papers where the surface texture and base color are part of the finished look — from Neenah's Estate Label collection and Mohawk's Eggshell Felt papers to natural brown Kraft.

Metallic & Specialty

Holographic, Gold Metallic or Silver Metallic

Materials where reflection, shimmer or metallic color is built into the stock itself.

See the materials side by side

Color, transparency, texture and reflection are easier to understand when you can see the actual stocks next to each other.

The material changes the way your artwork looks

The same artwork can look very different depending on what sits underneath the ink.

The same serum bottle label design printed on Crystal Clear, Kraft, White PP and Holographic materials side by side

Clear

Parts of the design can interact with the container or product underneath the label.

Kraft

The natural brown paper affects the way printed colors appear and can become part of the design.

Metallic and Holographic

Reflection and shimmer come from the stock itself, so the material can show through the artwork and change the finished look.

White and bright white stocks

White PP, Matte PVC, Semi-Gloss, Eggshell Felt White and Estate #8 Paper give artwork a white or bright white starting surface, but the sheen and texture vary by material.

Cream and beige stocks

Estate #9 Paper's cream base and Eggshell Felt Beige's warm beige base become part of the finished look. White areas in your artwork won't appear bright white the way they would on a white or synthetic stock.

Material and finish are not the same thing

Material is what the label is made from. Examples include White PP, Matte PVC, Semi-Gloss Paper, Crystal Clear, Estate #4, #8 and #9 Paper, Eggshell Felt White, Eggshell Felt Beige, Natural Kraft Paper, Holographic, Gold Metallic and Silver Metallic.

Finish is an additional treatment applied when the material and configuration support it. Examples include Gloss Lamination, Matte Lamination, Soft Touch, 2D Foil, 3D Foil and Spot UV.

Not every finish is available with every material. The calculator will show the finishes available for the material you select.

Paper or synthetic?

Paper and synthetic labels can look similar from a distance, but they start with different base materials.

Paper

Choose paper when the look and feel of the stock is part of what you want from the label.

Synthetic

Choose synthetic when you want a film-based label rather than paper.

Not sure? Start with the appearance you want and then check the individual material page for the exact details.

Want the material itself to create the effect?

Holographic, Gold Metallic and Silver Metallic do not start with a plain white surface. Their reflective character is already built into the stock.

You can still add supported finishes on top. Check the individual material page or calculator for the combinations currently available.
